Overview
High throughput DNA sequencing enhances the depth and speed of analysis in microbial and viral research, significantly improving our understanding of infectious disease. The GS FLX System, with its long reads and easy-to-use software tools, enables comprehensive analysis of complete microbial genomes, including multiple bacterial genomes on a single run, and provides access to species that cannot be cultured in the laboratory environment.
Applications
Whole genome sequencing
Perform de novo whole genome sequencing of novel microbial species and re-sequencing for comparative genomics. The system's long read length and outstanding data quality ensure rapid and accurate assembly of multiple genomes in as little as a single instrument run.
HIV sequencing
Get a complete picture of the diversity of viral populations within an infected individual by ultra-deep sequencing. The sensitivity of the GS FLX System detects rare genetic variants constituting as little as 1% of the population.
Metagenomics
Characterize the microbial abundance and diversity of environmental habitats by sequencing their metagenome or metatranscriptome. The GS FLX System facilitates fast and accurate identification of diverse members within microbial communities.
Transcriptome sequencing
Obtain an complete and accurate bacterial transcriptome by sequencing full-length cDNA libraries and expression tags. The sensitivity and long reads of the 454 Sequencing system ensure comprehensive detection of novel expressed genes and genetic variations within and between bacterial strains.
Genetic variation detection
Use the GS FLX Sequencer System to detect SNPs, insertions and deletions or genetic manipulations of microbial strains. Comprehensive detection of genetic variations is made possible by the system's long reads and complete data analysis tools.
Identification of infectious agents
Identify potential disease causing agents quickly and accurately with the GS FLX System by sequencing and subtracting cDNA libraries from infected and non-infected samples.
Small RNA analysis
Identify novel small RNAs and their role in host-pathogen interactions by sequencing small RNA transcriptomes. The long reads of the 454 Sequencing system ensure that all classes of small RNAs are captured.
