How has 454 Sequencing changed the way your customers approach their research?
We have seen a significant shift from traditional Sanger sequencing to 454 technology for a number of applications, most notably BAC sequencing, bacterial genomes, small RNA analysis and large-scale SNP studies. Customers who traditionally would have relied on Sanger technology to perform genome-wide SNP studies are increasingly choosing to use 454 sequencing because it offers high-quality results in days rather than years, for a fraction of the cost. We have also seen 454 Sequencing open doors to entirely new areas of research and in to entirely new markets for us, such as renewable energy research. The addition of a 454 Sequencing instrument to our technology base has lead to a significant broadening of our customer base and the long term outlook for growth remains very strong.
How has the system performance in your lab?
In a high-throughput facility like SeqWright, the reliability of a system is critical to our ability to deliver services as promised to our customers. The Genome Sequencer FLX System has performed beautifully in our lab. The system was installed in a single day without complications. Training was carried out the next day and we have never looked back. The Genome Sequencer FLX system has reliably delivered better than specified throughput and data quality. Additionally, the support, what few times we've needed it, has been extremely helpful.
Where do you see the use of 454 Sequencing in the future?
454 Sequencing is well suited to move towards use in clinical trials, especially with recent research in the system's ability to detect resistant strains in HIV, HPV and other infectious diseases.
